THE captain of the Royal Navy’s new aircraft carrier has warned Russia will become a bigger threat – as the first fighter jets landed on the £3billion ship.

American F35B Lightning jets flown by British pilots landed and took off from HMS Queen Elizabeth as the UK’s biggest-ever warship began flight trials off the US coast.

The carrier – nicknamed Big Lizzie – will bolster the UK’s sea and air defences amid Vladimir Putin’s growing aggression to the West.

Commanding Officer Jerry Kyd said it had arrived as Britain faced a host of growing threats.

He added: “What we’re seeing now is a resurgent Russia which is presenting a credible threat again to the western states and the rules-based system. And that must be taken seriously.”
